Emilio Navaira was intoxicated

Toxicology tests indicate that Grammy-winning Tejano singer Emilio Navaira was intoxicated when the tour bus he was driving crashed into a collection of freeway barrels in suburban Houston in March, authorities said.

The toxicology tests were released this week, and the Houston Chronicle reported on the results Thursday night on its Web site. The newspaper also reported that Navaira was arrested for driving while intoxicated in September of 2000.

Navaira was behind the wheel of his tour bus March 23 when it slammed into the freeway barrels, throwing him through the windshield. Doctors had to perform two brain surgeries and repaired a potentially fatal aneurysm on Navaira's right lung.

The singer is expected to have trouble with his memory and concentration as he recovers. But his doctors have said Navaira has been able to stand, eat, sign his name and converse with his family.

Navaira, known to has fans simply as Emilio, has released more than a dozen albums with his band. He won a Grammy for best Tejano album in 2003 with "Acuerdate."
